Beckett allowed a Derek Jeter solo hit and walked two batters in the first before he recovered to impel seven strong innings as the Sox defeat the Yankees. 10-1 in front of a sellout crowd of 36,215 at Fenway Park. The win which occurred less than 24 hours after the Sox’ bullpen frittered away a five-run lead in an 8-7 loss increased the Sox’ AL East bring about to 5 ½ games and reduced their magic be for clinching the division to nine. Beckett allowed the one run on three hits and two walks while striking out seven on his way to becoming the first pitcher in the majors with 19 wins. “I thought Beckett did exactly what we kind of have go to expect and also needed,” said. “He pitched like an ace of a staff today. Against the best lineup in baseball he went out there and did exactly what we needed.”In more ways than one. Beckett no doubt earned some additional lay aside with his teammates in the seventh when he ended a streak of 12 straight outs by hitting Jason Giambi with a fling with two outs. Favorite Yankees target was hit by a pitch from Chien-Ming Wang in the fifth—the sixth measure he’s been plunked by the Yankees since the go away of last year—and was forced to get with a alter wrist contusion. Robinson Cano followed the Giambi plunking with a hit to provide the Yankees with their first threat since the first but Beckett whiffed Melky Cabrera to cap an impressive performance that served as advance proof of his maturation. Beckett threw 30 pitches in the first but just 78 the rest of the way. He was as dominant as he was economical over the final six innings: He struck out six in an eight-batter continue between the second and fourth including the align in the fourth and allowed only one baserunner (a walk to Bobby Abreu in the third) over a 19-batter span between the first and seventh.“We all recognize what pitch limits are for a given guy and for him to go out and be that much more efficient the following six innings and [to] get seven full innings with 108 pitches says a lot about him,” Sox pitching coach John Farrell said. “[He wasn’t] changing his approach completely yet [he was] still maintaining his focus and concentration.”Francona and thought the laborious first was a matter of the Yankees’ ever-patient ways and not poor location by Beckett. “He was close. [he] wasn’t misfiring all over the place,” Varitek said. “He was just settling into his delivery.”comfort the Beckett of a year ago—indeed change surface the Beckett of less than three weeks ago—may undergo allowed the Yankees’ methodical ways to alter his approach. Beckett allowed 22 runs and issued 16 walks in four starts (20 innings) against the Yankees measure year. He pitched into the seventh in each of his first three starts against the Yankees this year including Apr. 21 when he allowed four runs in the first two innings but later retired 17 of 19 batters and earned the win in a 7-5 victory. But he also allowed four earned runs each measure out and gave up a career-high 13 hits in the Bronx Aug. 29.“He walked two guys and gave up a solo home run—it would be easy to say that wow this is going to be the bet that he pitched in New York,” Farrell said. “Yet he didn’t let things unravel and he very much remained pitch-to-pitch. Which is a bland statement but it’s clearly what he did today.”Speaking of bland statements that’s about all Beckett and the Sox issue when it comes to discussing his Cy Young candidacy. “Right now hopefully our cerebrate isn’t on the Cy Young,” Varitek said. “Being his teammate what he’s done for us. [he’s] a huge candidate.”Beckett has said for weeks he’s not thinking about the Cy Young or a 20-win season only his next start and he shrugged off talk Saturday that he approaches a so-called “statement” bet differently than any other start. “I don’t know that I relish [pitching against the Yankees],” Beckett said. “Just do what I always do. Just go out and try to execute pitches.”He’s done that come up enough to put together the write of toughen that’s been expected out of him since the Marlins selected him with the back up pick of the 1999 draft. He ranks among the AL’s top five in wins ERA (fifth at 3.20). beat (fourth at 1.13) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (third at 4.74). Only one other pitcher the Indians’ C. C. Sabathia ranks in the top five in all four categories. All this a mere year after Beckett posted the highest ERA (5.01) highest beat (1.30) and lowest strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.14) of his go.“I evaluate we’ve seen a guy really act a go further,” Farrell said. “He’s a wildly successful young guy as a major league pitcher but to see him refine that—to basically cut his walks in half from a year ago [Beckett walked 74 measure year and has issued 37 walks this year]. I evaluate that speaks volumes. That’s a tangible number that speaks to his come to pitching. It’s not just relying on velocity or trying to impel the ball by people. It’s pitching.”In the end it was Varitek who unwittingly described the season-long evolution of Beckett while attempting to explain his success Saturday. “It’s execution—execution of all your pitches,” Varitek said. “He’s a big strong kid.”Varitek paused. “Young man.”He paused again. “Man.”Diehard managing editor Jerry Beach can be reached at diehardmag@yahoo com. (posted by )Unless the Tampa Bay Devil Rays completely break and lose the final thirteen games of the toughen (they DO finish up against Seattle. Los Angeles. Boston. New York and Toronto so maybe that's not so crazy after all) this will be the time since 2000 that no major unify aggroup loses 100 games. That's the good news. The bad news? There are eleven teams with a reasonable chance at losing 90 or more games which might be a record. The way my Cardinals have been playing they could very well be one of those teams. 6. Bob Griese. "Eliminate the Draft" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-22 18:24:50

Teams can pay on international free agents without restriction an favor for high-revenue teams such as the Yankees and Red Sox. The amateur draft designed to funnel top talent to the weakest teams instead rewards clubs that are willing to excel the bonuses recommended by the commissioner's office -- another advantage for you-know-who. Greater resources allow the Yankees and Red Sox greater margin for error as they act high-ceiling talent. Some teams backed off right-hander Joba Chamberlain in 2006 because of injury concerns. Not the Yankees. Other teams backed off right-hander Ian Kennedy because he was represented by Boras. Again not the Yankees. In '05 the Boras calculate helped the BoSox arrive right-hander Craig Hansen who thus far has been a bust. Right-hander Clay Buchholz fell to the Red Sox in the same draft after some teams backed off him due to his clutch in April 2004 for stealing laptop computers from a middle educate. Money also buys increased flexibility in the later rounds. inspect in inform: Red Sox categorise A first baseman Lars Anderson who was rated a supplemental first-round talent by Baseball America in '06 but cut to the 18th round due to his bonus demands. The Red Sox signed him for $825,000. The draft restricts the give of talent to the majors by limiting which players teams can write. Once players figured out they could extract money from teams by refusing to write or saying they were going to college prices of drafted players started going up and the whole point of the compose broke drink. If teams were able to compete for all players sure the rich teams would get the best. But they do anyway. At least the other teams would undergo a chance to write the beat of the be and sight the gems the others missed. And with foreign and US players competing on the same level my anticipate is the determine of signing talent would go drink overall. It's measure to abolish the compose. When you consider that drafting a player is essentially equivalent to signing them to getting the first 3 years of a players' career for basically remove and then controlling the next 3 years at below merchandise value you've got to evaluate that teams are signing players for well-below their expected marginal revenue product. Heck this is why players like Anderson and Kennedy were able to get signed for exorbitant bonuses: they're clearly worth it. Taking that into consideration eliminating the draft would do no more than accept these top prospects to desire out their market determine which is clearly higher than what they write for in the compose (at least in the vast majority of cases). So I anticipate I would evaluate to see bonuses go dramatically if the compose were eliminating hurting not only the smaller-market clubs that can't afford this additional money but also the larger markets who all things compete would rather not spend more money. Instead of eliminating the compose how about just fixing it? Or at least instead of this toothless "suggested schedule" egest actually bring down (or at least cap) the bonuses players get during the draft? compel strict penalties on players for not signing etc. And as long as I'm dreaming how about a real salary cap in addition to a salary floor? And how about we just get the whole team that turned the NFL into a top-quality league to come in and completely overhaul MLB? *sigh*Posted by: mraver at September 15. 2007 11:54 AM There are so many things they can do to the draft whether it's schedule bonuses or eliminating the bonuses.. it makes no comprehend to me that eliminating it altogether is a exceed option. Still I'm hopeful we could be at shoring up the compose.1-Lock in all signing amounts based on the lay & go taken.2-All players (Latin & Japanese alike) must bear on to the compose in request to play. If they bear on and are not drafted they are free to sign with anyone for that year. If they don't write they must again apply for the compose. If they don't sign they are able to play minor unify roll but must bear on to the compose before they can arrive the majors.3-Dump the posting affect with Japanese teams. We do need to balance the Japanese leagues but do so from a league pool.4-Get all ML teams to co-op on academies especially in the inner cities here in America. We don't put to good use our own talent and in particular don't create on a vast potential wasting away because baseball is much more difficult to organize than basketball leagues. How many NBA players are less than 6'2"? Not many.5-Make sure the signing amounts are a decent living walk with full Medical coverage while active. Baseball needs to draw good athletes and must compete against football and basketball. Get serious about investing in the person not just their ability. They ordain need the whole case to alter it in the bigs anyway.6-Living conditions in the minors is not good with crummy diets.. and the road is desire. Who the hell wants to ride the buses for 3-4 years before they get to the show? Modest improvements would do wonders.7-Pass a federal law that restricts tax dollars used to give professional sports (building stadiums). Why do we subsidize billionaires? OK. This is very annoying. convey You. He played a alter hit into a manifold. Ain't no stoppin' us now. We got the groove! Blew the high fastball by Fields. Ain't no stoppin' us now. We got the incise! Willits is a little bit comical in the outfield trying to follow drink balls. I have no solution at this measure for that problem. compete Fig in CF. He can do it. And he's exceed than Reg. Fig has a weak arm but he does come up with some outstanding grabs in CF. Ain't no stoppin' us now. We got the incise! Figgins has one of the strongest arms on the aggroup. His positioning and route-taking to balls in the outfield are what are suspect. Similar with his infield defense -- Figgy's superior gun gets him out of a lot of affect to to his lack of lateral range and poor positioning/thinking. I'm the biggest Figgy fan out there.. just thought I'd set the preserve straight here. Awww!! That was just a few feet short of a Willits first homerun. Nice manifold anyway Reggie. "When you play this Angels aggroup with their lineup you're gonna see a lot of soft locate hits." Hence the 90-95 wins we'll have. Here's your boy about to compete RF for the rest of the bet. ooooooo the chess game.................. Fig in to hit for Evans. Guillen goes to the LHP. Fig can't hit right handed (or can he?). Your act. Sosh. Ain't no stoppin' us now. We got the groove! i presume someone in the crowd i remember when they were yelling that in Boston months ago This is looking desire a AAA game. Quit the horse**. Ain't no stoppin' us now. We got the groove! Are there any defensive metrics which can interpret Reg's clumsiness in CF? Or GMJ's smoothness? No - I don't evaluate so. It can't be quantified. Ain't no stoppin' us now. We got the groove! They just haven't figured out how to bring home the bacon it yet. If they can bring in the roll through the touch govern they can also bring in the fielders. It's just a matter of measure. Hoping Ervin Santana turns it around in flavor Lake. Go. Ervin! Ain't no stoppin' us now. We got the incise! That 6.14 ERA in September just got worse. Hoping Ervin Santana turns it around in flavor Lake. Go. Ervin! Speier able to stop the insanity. GMJ........................ GET WELL SOON!!!!##### NOW ######## people understand why a good CF got $50 million. Ain't no stoppin' us now. We got the incise! 3-2 bottom on the 9th.
